Buying second hand goods

Potentially this can be a great way of saving money – but there are a number of issues that you should bear in mind.

First and foremost, do you know that you are buying from a reputable dealer and that they have the right to sell the items in their possession? Could you be purchasing stolen goods?

Stolen goods are often disposed of through car boot fairs and second hand outlets.  As a general rule these are the proceeds of petty theft or stolen from sheds, garages etc. However, on occasions, valuable antiques and stock deliveries can sometimes be found to be on sale.

When considering buying second hand goods, we suggest the following good practice :-

  • Check items for any identifiable markings such as postcodes. For around a pound, you can purchase novelty key rings with UV lights in them that will show any UV pen security markings.  If you are buying from a private individual, ask them to repeat any postcode that is marked. If they not able to do this, be very wary.
  • Keep a look out for items where any identifying marks (such as the name or postcode of the original owner) has been erased.
  • Be wary of electrical items etc. which come without their original leads or user guides where applicable.
  • If you suspect that any goods are stolen, contact your local police station or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 888.
