Background

The Big Derbyshire Clean Up is part of Derbyshire’s Safer Neighbourhoods project to improve the environment, reduce the fear of crime and boost community spirit. It is funded by £747,000 provided by Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Constabulary and the Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership.

The campaign is well underway and is making communities cleaner and safer.

The County Council’s community safety unit is working with dedicated teams of police, district council, community safety partnership staff and community groups giving residents support to get involved.

We are giving practical support and advice about how to carry out the clean ups with activities such as litter picks, graffiti removal, fence repairs and clearing footpaths.

Our public relations team is providing organised groups with publicity material including posters, T-shirts, balloons, stickers, badges and help with advertising to get as many people as possible involved.

We asked residents to tell us things they were concerned about in their community – such as litter, graffiti or anti-social behaviour – and let us know how we could help.

Thanks to their response dozens of areas across the county have now been identified to benefit.

The aim of The Big Derbyshire Clean Up is to get residents of all ages working together and attract interest from youth clubs, local businesses, schools and community groups to make an immediate and visible impact on a particular area.

Similar projects have shown that regenerating areas and improving the local environment can help residents of all ages feel safer, feel proud about where they live, reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour and boost community spirit.
