Each of us can play an important part in reducing overall crime levels, by taking action to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime ourselves by taking on board crime prevention advice.  This can be by making sure our homes and vehicles are secured, keeping valuables in a safe place, and making sure property is marked.  We can also improve our personal safety by keeping wallets and purses, mobile phones and other items from view that are of interest to the opportunist thief.

Schemes and options, specifically for people in Bolsover include the following:

Bolsover Safe and Secure Scheme
This is an application for free home security, as a victim of crime or vulnerable to crime, you are eligible for free fitting of home security to our standard specification.  People who are ‘vulnerable to crime’ (at risk of becoming a victim of crime) include:

  • Properties that display poor security measures (easy targets)
  • Owners/tenants who are in receipt of low or no income (in receipt of benefits). 
  • Owners/tenants that belong to one of the following groups: recent victims of crime (within last six months), elderly, disabled, infirm, minority ethnic groups, lone parent, women and people living in high crime areas.

Standard specification installed by CAN Rangers includes:

  • Max. 1 door chain 
  • Max. 1 door viewer 
  • Max. 4 glass guard window alarms (downstairs windows) 
  • Max. 2 mini motion alarms (1 in house, 1 in shed/garage) 
  • Max. 1 patio door lock 
  • Max. 1 door chime/alarm 
  • Also available are door chains for UPVC doors, window locks, timer plug-ins and door chain mirrors. 
  • Both five lever door locks and outside security lights are fitted by Groundwork Creswell – please specify on form.

Property Marking 
your belongings is one of the easiest and effective ways of protecting your possessions. Property marking packs can be obtained for free at your local crime cracking day or by contacting the community safety office on 01246 242217.

Older People
may feel more vulnerable to some crimes, but they are actually less likely to become victims. Personal alarms are available free from the community safety office (Tel: 01246 242217)

Neighbourhood Watch
works by developing a close liaison between households in a neighbourhood and the local police. One of the ways to make your community safer is to join or set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. The aim of Neighbourhood Watch is to help people protect themselves and their properties, reduce fear of crime and improve their community.
