Probation in Derbyshire is part of a National Probation Service, a Criminal Justice Agency consisting of a National Directorate and 42 Probation Services throughout England and Wales.  As a law enforcement agency, we work closely with the police and prison services as well as courts and the Crown Prosecution Service.  In Derbyshire the Service works closely with Local Authorities, statutory services and with a range of independent and voluntary sector partners.

The Service operates within the governments correctional policy framework, contributing primarily to

‘ensure the effective delivery of justice, avoiding unnecessary delay, through efficient investigation, detection, prosecution and court procedures.  To minimise the threat to and intimidation of witnesses and to engage with and support victims.’ (Home Office Aim 3)

‘deliver effective custodial and community sentences, to reduce re-offending and protect the public, through the prison and probation services in partnership with the Youth Justice Board’ (Home Office Aim 4)
The Probation Service responsibilities are to:

• Provide the courts with advice and information to assist sentencing and decisions about bail
• Design, provide and promote effective programmes for supervising offenders safety in the community
• To implement community sentences passed by the courts
• To work in partnership with other bodies and services in using the most constructive methods of dealing with offenders and defendants
• To assist prisoners, before and after release, to lead law abiding lives 
• To help communities prevent crime and reduce its effect on victims  

Derbyshire Probation contributes to community safety through its direct work with offenders, by providing information and factors that contribute to higher levels of offending, by working with partners to reduce the impact of drug related crime, by targeting prolific offenders and through the provision of labour from offenders working on Community Punishment Orders.
