Beating the burglers in Calow
High-tech ways to beat the burglars are being offered free of charge to residents in Calow.
North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership is working in close partnership with the police to wipe out domestic burglaries by using a substance called Smart Water.
The invisible Ultra-violet liquid, which can't be washed off, can be sprayed onto people's belongings and contains a unique DNA code that is easily identifiable when placed under a UV lamp.
The initiative means that if anything is lost or stolen, officers can scan the item and match the DNA code up to its rightful owner. According to police statistics, Smart Water is very successful and has helped decrease the domestic burglary rate in Derbyshire by 57% over the last five years.
In order to help tenants and residents protect their own property, NED Community Partnership, together with the police and Rykneld Homes is hosting a 'Smart Water Day' in Calow on Tuesday, June 24.
During the event, the Partnership and Police will be handing out free bottles of Smart Water worth £15 each, to tenants and residents in designated areas of the village.
The Police will also give out Smart Water stickers to be used in people's homes as an added deterrent to burglars.
Councillor Peter Riggott, Chair of the NED Community Safety Partnership, said: "We are always looking at new ways to help people protect their homes and belongings. Smart Water is a very effective way of doing this with very impressive results in reducing the amount of crime and in returning stolen property to its owners."
The Partnership together with the Police have distributed Smart Water to other areas of North East Derbyshire and seen an impressive reduction in burglary rates.
