Celebrate Community Safety Week in Derbyshire Libraries
It’s Community Safety Week in Derbyshire County Council libraries from 18 to 22 February.
And a host of fun events and activities are planned during the half-term holidays to help people of all ages stay safe at home and in their neighbourhood.
The week-long event has been organised by the county council, Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and other organisations working to make Derbyshire even safer.
There will be displays and events at eight libraries around the county – at Ripley, Clowne, Newbold, Bakewell, Sandiacre, Glossop, Killamarsh and Swadlincote.
Library staff will be joined by police community support officers to hand out free resource packs containing information, leaflets and give-aways.
There are 500 free personal attack alarms up for grabs and there will also be the chance to win one of eight iPod Shuffles or a £40 voucher by completing a quiz.
There will also be story-telling sessions, face painting and games for younger visitors while adults will get the chance to meet neighbourhood police teams to ask advice on a range of issues.
Visitors can also meet fire officers and there will be the chance to look around a fire engine at Newbold and Sandiacre libraries between 1pm and 4pm on Monday 18 February.
Trading Standards officers will also be offering advice and highlighting Scams Awareness Month which is running throughout February.
During the week, police community support officers will be on board Derbyshire County Council’s mobile libraries to spread the message to rural parts of the county.
Although events are focused on the eight libraries, resource packs will be available at all libraries during the week and everyone who borrows or loans an item will receive a free bookmark as well.
Visitors will also be able to find out more by logging on to www.derbyshire.gov.uk or www.saferderbyshire.gov.uk using one of the free computers available at the libraries.
Cabinet member for cultural services Councillor Bob Janes said: “Derbyshire’s already a safe place to live and we’re working hard to make it even safer.
“By teaming up with our colleagues to launch Community Safety Week we can spread the message to even more people who use Derbyshire libraries.”
Councillor Clive Moesby, cabinet member for community safety, added: “This is part of our continuing commitment to make Derbyshire a safer place to live, work and visit.
“I hope as many people as possible will take the chance to come along and find out how we are working with partner organisations to achieve this.
