Matlock shopkeepers keep in touch with police via new radios
Shopkeepers in Matlock have received radios that will allow them to keep in contact with each other and local police officers.
The radios have been funded by Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership and have been given to a range of shops in the town, including Boots, Woolworths, the Co-Op and M & Co.
Staff at the shops have now formed the Matlock Shopwatch group and the radios will allow members to talk to each other and the police to warn of potential incidents, including shoplifting or anti-social behaviour.
Police officers and Police Community Support Officers who are part of Matlock Safer Neighbourhood Team will also have a radio.
Inspector Shaun Woodcock, Section Inspector for Matlock, said: "We are grateful to the Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership for providing the funding for the radio link scheme. This will help us to work together more effectively to reduce shoplifting and deal with potential offenders, creating a safer environment for everyone in Matlock."
Councillor Lewis Rose OBE, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership and Leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, said: "I am delighted that the traders of Matlock are working with the police and the partnership to help keep Matlock safe. Matlock is the latest place to benefit from the radio link and shop watch schemes, which have proved effective in Ashbourne and other areas, and is part of our work to minimise alcohol related crime and disorder. This will help keep the Derbyshire Dales one of the safest places in England to live, work and visit."
