Ozbox packs a punch in South Normanton

For the last six weeks, Thursday evenings have been Ozbox night for young people in South Normanton.

The Ozbox scheme is run voluntarily by off-duty police officers, with the aim of encouraging young people into boxing based fitness sessions.

The classes have been instrumental in reducing the amount of nuisance behaviour in South Normanton. By giving young people something to do and taking them off the streets, police have seen no calls for service on the evenings Ozbox is in town.

Around 40 local teenagers turned up each week and, despite some initial reluctance, everyone took part, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment.

Husband and wife team, PC Jo Osbaldeston and Inspector Steve Osbaldeston organised the sessions within the local community.

"We saw a great change in the young people throughout the course of Ozbox." said PC Jo Osbaldeston.

"At first, some of the older participants were reluctant to work with those younger than themselves, but now they've bonded as a team and the older teenagers are acting as mentors for the younger kids.

"We've also noticed a real improvement in the teenager's manners and it's great to see all involved so enthusiastic for what they're doing.

"Each young person will leave the course with a certificate of achievement and, most importantly, increased self respect and an insight into team working."

The Chesterfield and North East Council part-funded the project with kind permission of Chesterfield police Divisional Commander, Debbie Kelly.

The Ozbox team would also like to thank Norman Taylor, manager of the South Normanton Community Centre.
