Park play to look at alcohol
A funny but thought-provoking play about young people and alcohol is being staged in Queen’s Park next week (July 9) as part of a multi-agency campaign to get young people - and their parents - thinking about issues related to drinking alcohol.
Called Tight, the play tells the story of one night in the lives of four young people. It’s a night packed with fun and games, love and loss and explores the characters’ behaviour and alcohol use, and the potential consequences it has for them.
Members of the audience will be encouraged to discuss what is happening and how the characters are behaving as the play – by Chesterfield-based Brief Candle Theatre - progresses.
Places at the performance, which are limited, are being offered through Unit 10, youth centres and organisations such as Connexions.
The outdoor performance will form the centrepiece of a week of activities being organised under the banner of Having Fun Being Safe with a range of organisations that provide services for young people involved. They include Base III , Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership support team, Chesterfield PubWatch, Connexions, Derbyshire Sexual Health Promotion Service, National Children’s Homes, the Police and Youth Services.
Posters produced as part of the national Know Your Limits campaign which ask the question: 'You wouldn't start a night like this, so why end it that way?' have been distributed to youth workers throughout the borough and a range of activities on the theme are being run in youth centres.
Louise Brewer, Manager of Unit 10, said: “This work is aimed at helping young people to enjoy themselves without putting themselves or others at risk or breaking the law. We want to encourage them to think about what drinking alcohol can cause them to do. Everyone involved hopes young people will enjoy this part of our campaign and take something positive away from it.”
The Having Fun Being Safe campaign will continue throughout the year, with further work planned including giving parents an insight into under 18s club nights, work in Chesterfield College and promotion of Know Your Limits facts, figures and messages.
