Sport and safety go hand-in-hand in High Peak Project

There will be no excuse for High Peak youngsters to be bored after the launch of an activity-packed project.

A new youth vehicle, called Mini Me, is hitting the roads in the area. The county council asked young people in the High Peak what leisure activities they wanted – and they’ve helped design the Mini Me vehicle.

It carries equipment for sports including football, cricket, hockey, netball and basketball.

Mini Me will be officially unveiled at Gamesley Community Centre on Wednesday, 9 July. It will take a summer-long tour of the High Peak, stopping off at schools and youth groups to help youngsters give boredom the boot, and will then be used throughout the coming years.

It aims to prevent anti-social behaviour by giving them positive things to do with their spare time.

And youth workers will carry Stay Safe resource kits on the vehicle – including a range of anti drugs, alcohol and bullying kits.

Councillor Clive Moesby, Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for community safety, said: “This is a fantastic new project which will give young people plenty to do.

“We’ve listened to what young people want and the Mini Me vehicle will take the leisure activities to venues on their doorstep to enable them to get the most out of it.

“A key priority for us is to reduce crime and the fear of crime. Young people are often portrayed as the people who cause anti-social behaviour but they are just as likely to be victims of it.

“Projects throughout the summer will highlight the distress anti-social behaviour causes and help young people to avoid falling victim of it.”

Other projects include:

  • Music and dance sessions – including street dancing and cheer leading

  • Sports sessions

  • A staying safe residential course – young people will explore issues of safety to design an advice leaflet for county-wide distribution

  • Active and healthy volunteers – a project to train 32 teen volunteers to deliver projects on health using interactive computer games, dance mats, snowboards and lightweight gym equipment.
