Chesterfield CSP - Progress So Far
The Community Safety Strategy was launched in Chesterfield and Staveley town centres in April and May 2005, where members of the public received free goodies and crime prevention advice, along with copies of the strategy.
Since then the Partnership has been busy delivering projects to reduce crime in our priority areas.
Vehicle Crime

Burglary and Theft
- Three Crime Awareness Days, funded by Derbyshire County Council, delivered home security advice in Dunston, Rother and Brockwell;
- Responded to local crime problems by increasing awareness about home, shed and garden security;
- Attend older people’s events to raise awareness amongst the 50+ age group about distraction burglary and doorstep crime.
- Visits to hotels, Leisure Centres and golf courses to deliver posters and information leaflets about reducing vehicle crime.
- October 2005 onwards: Derbyshire County Council funded a Target Hardening initiative for burglary victims in cases where an alrm would have prevented break-ins.
- Christmas Campaign 2005: ‘Operation Window Shopping’ targets Walton and Brimington, delivering crime prevention advice.
- October 2005: Property marking packs are delivered to retail outlets selling games consoles as part of ‘Operation Window Shopping’.
- November 2005: funded 50 Neighbourhood Watch signs
- Library display set up at Newbold Library for Jan 2006 and at Staveley Library for Feb 2006: general crime prevention literature and Partnership information.
- October 2005: Senior Safe Days in Walton and Staveley delivered by Crime Reduction Officers, the Partnership Team, F&RS and the HiA.
- ‘Burglar Alert’ signs erected on Selhurst Rd following a few distraction burglaries. Crime prevention information was also given out.
- November 2005: Personal safety talks are given to residents of Ability (formerly Mencap) on the dangers associated with distraction burglars and bogus callers. Personal attack alarms are demonstrated and distributed.
- November 2005: Cracking Crime Event in partnership with Bolsover & North East Derbyshire. Personal attack alarms, UV pens and crime prevention advice was given out.
- November 2005: Clear the Fear Event was attended by the Partnership. Stalls and advice for people aged 50+. Free light bulbs were given away. Trading Standards commissioned a play on doorstep crime which was performed on the day.
- March 2006: personal safety talks given to the ‘falls group’ at Walton Hospital. Personal Attack Alarms and safe cans were given away.
- Operation Auto Motive was developed to target theft of, from & damage to vehicles. This was carried out in Middlecroft in April 2006 and
- Birdholme in May 2006. 1500 packs in total were distributed throughout Auto Motive to residents, golf club members and car dealerships for their customers.
- Phase II of Auto Motive was delivered by the Police. Car dealerships invited to the Police Station in June 2006.
- Phase III of Auto motive targeted golf courses in July. Advice was given to members and information packs and personal attack alarms were handed out.
- April to June 2006: 120 households received advice/security measures.
- July 2006: Talks given to local residents at Hunloke Community Garden on personal safety.
- June 2006: personal safety talks given at Brimington Luncheon Club.
- April to July 2006: Further Personal Safety Talks were given to Hasland Neighbourhood Watch, Walton Hospital Hip Group, Central Methodist Church and St Francis Hall.
- An event was held in July 2006 to revitalise existing Neighbourhood Watches and to recruit new members at Inkersall Social Club. Talks on personal safety / burglary given, security-related quiz, raffle and information packs were distributed
Anti-social Behaviour
- Supported Summer Sesh diversionary activities for young people in Hasland and St Leonard’s and Rother;
- Attended the Safety Crew event for Year 6 pupils to discuss anti-social behaviour and the dangers of drugs/alcohol;
- Helped to increase the use of leisure activities by funding Positive Futures, a diversionary project for young people interested in sport in Middlecroft;
- Provided access paths to the Youth Shelter in Inkersall so it can be used all year long.
- Section 30s – Organised and arranged a multi agency approach towards facilitating the dispersal of groups of people who had been causing nuisance and disturbance in specific areas.
- Commission Drug Education Awareness Programme (DEAP) running between Sept 2006 and March 2007. The aim is to increase awareness of substance misuse in young people and this will be delivered to 300 young people.
- Developing a group to refer on to Prevent and Deter Scheme. Currently dealing with 35 cases where individuals are of concern to two or more agencies.
- Mobile youth provision. Projects are running in the following three areas. Bull Ring = Operation Matador, Town Centre = SMASHED, Middlecroft = Positive Futures and Gamezone.
- July 06 - the Partnership Sergeant and a Fire Officer conducted a walk around to identify ASB hotspots. Hotspots identified were Grangewood, Walton Drive and Derby Road.
- Warning letters = 1st Warnings: 140; 2nd Warnings: 15; ABCs: 6; ASBOs: 18; Banning order scheme: 87
- 1400 children seen as part of Safety Crew in May 06. wristbands given out. Evaluation pending.
Violent Crime
- Developed a confidential outreach support service in Staveley for people to access support and advice;
- Personal attack alarms have been given out to older people at organised events;
- Working with Pubwatch and local Police personnel to develop alcohol misuse campaigns in the town centre.
- Dec 2005: The "Who's Taking You Home" Campaign is delivered. July 2006: planning begins for the Dec 2006 campaign: "SMASHED - who pays?"
- August 2006: The Town Centre Intelligence Project is launched and a banning scheme is operating. By July 2006, 87 Banning Orders including ASBOs are in place.
- Personal safety talks are delivered to 200 students at Chesterfield College as part of "Who's Taking You Home" campaign (Dec 05). In May 2006, 250 students are given a personal safety presentation by Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership and 1000 personal alarms are given out.
- Funding is agreed for the Perpetrator Project with North Derbyshire Alcohol Advice Service. The project is underway.10,000 cards have been printed and passed to agencies to deliver. Approx 5000 cards have been handed out.
- Careline Equipment was purchased in 2004/5 and the Health Improvement Agency have offered target hardening equipment to victims of Domestic Abuse as a priority.
