The key to reducing risk when banking cash is to avoid having any regular pattern.
Below are a number of points to take into account :
- Do not keep excessive amounts of cash on the premises, even if this means banking takings more than once a day.
- Prepare your deposit in a locked office, and never leave it unattended.
- If the deposit will not be immediately taken to the bank, lock it away in the safe.
- Wherever possible, carry out banking during normal bank hours.
- If you must use the night deposit safe, try to go during daylight hours.
- When using the night deposit safe, always double check that the deposit bag has dropped properly and is not visible.
- Always lock your car doors once inside.
- When banking cash, vary the route you take, the place you park and most importantly the time that you go.
- If at all possible, do not bank cash alone, take someone with you. You might also wish to split the money between the two parties so that if one is targeted, only half the money is stolen.
- Cash bags are easily identifiable, even when plain. Transfer the bag into another, preferably an ordinary looking bag, such as a sports or shoulder bag.
- If possible, vary the staff who bank cash so as a pattern cannot be detected.
- When carrying cash, always be aware and alert to any vehicles parked near the bank entrance.
- Be aware of people around you when parking your car, and when walking. If you think you are being followed, head for somewhere busy.
- Teach your employees that when handling cash, all attention must be focused on that task. This enhances their safety, your safety and the safety of the customers.
