Information for businesses on vehicle safety

Motor vehicle crime is apparent and there are ways to reduce the risk of being a victim of this type of crime. Make sure all laptop equipment, money, paperwork, mobile devices and satellite navigation systems are out of sight. The best option is to carry these items with you, but if this isn't practical, they should be in the boot or the glove box for example. Note that you are still at risk if you leave your jecket on show - a thief may think there is money in it, and even if there isn't, you will be left with a broken window.  This applies to any car, business or personal. Commercial vehicle crime is when high value vehicles containing valuable goods are liable to being stolen. Many vehicles are taken from business premises, so additional security measures and ensuring your vehicles are empty overnight is important. When out and about you should use busy cafes and when refuelling, lock the vehicle every time. Ensure any delivery documents are out of sight, and if stopping overnigh, ensure that this is done in well lit areas.

Driving whilst using a mibile phone is illegal and dangerous. There is a penalty for doing so if you are caught up to a maximum of £1,000, and £2,500 for bus, van or lorry drivers. Ensure that you stop in a safe place to take calls, or install a mobile hands free device, such as a cradle for your phone with speakers, or a bluetooth headset.
