Gates and fences

Check for weak spots where a thief could get in, such as a low or sagging fence, or a back gate with a weak lock.
garden security
  • A thorny hedge along the boundary can act as a deterrent. Consider topping back fences with trellis which is more difficult to climb over.
  • A general rule of thumb is that at the front, your house should be easily visible to passers-by so that a burglar can't work unseen. Boundary materials and plants should be no higher than one metre.
  • But at the back of the house, the boundary should be at least 1.8 metres so that it's difficult to climb and there is more chance of an intruder climbing over being seen.

Top Tip

  • Using gravel on paths and driveways can alert you to someone approaching so intruders will not be so keen.
