Travelling on buses

Avoid the top deck - especially if you are alone. Stay downstairs and if possible sit as near to the driver as possible. Choose an aisle seat if there’s one free.

General travel tips

  • Plan your journey - work out how to get there AND back.
  • Keep enough money for the return fare.
  • Try to stay away from isolated bus stops, especially after dark.
  • On an empty bus, sit near the driver.
  • Always let someone know where you’re going - preferably your parents or the adult who normally looks after you.
  • Invest in a phone card and always carry it with you - if you get stranded you can phone home.
  • If you don’t have a phone card or any money, consider making a phone call by reversing the charges.
  • If you lose your bus fare or ticket, speak to the driver/ticket officer and explain. Give your name and address and explain the transport company can write to your home for payment. Carry some identification to prove you are genuine.
  • Never be tempted to walk home alone, especially if it's dark or you're unsure of the area.
  • Never hitch a lift. You don’t know who will stop.
  • If you are worried, frightened or think you may be in danger, call 999.
