How to keep your mobile phone safe

  • Register your phone on the National Property Register at www.immobilise.com
  • Don’t leave your phone on show in cars or on tables in pubs and cafes etc. This makes them easy to snatch, and identifies you as a potential target.
  • When you’re not using your phone lock the keypad with your unique personal identification number (P.I.N). This will stop others making calls on it if it is stolen.
  • When making calls in a public place be aware of who is around you.
  • Mark your phone with an ultra violet pen. You can write your postcode on the inside cover, which will uniquely identify it as yours.
  • Don't leave your mobile phone in a coat, jacket or bag that is unattended, such as in a cloakroom.
  • Don't pass your phone around a group of others to use - even if you know most or all of those present.
  • Don’t leave your mobile on show at home, especially near windows as it may encourage someone to break in to get it.
  • Record details of your electronic serial number (ESN) and consider separate insurance.
  • Some phones have an IMEI number which is a unique identifier for the phone; you can obtain this number by typing *#06# (star hash 06 hash) into your mobile phone and it will display a 15 digit number
  • If your phone is stolen or lost inform the police and your service provider immediately
  • Try not to use your mobile phone in crowded public places or whilst walking in busy streets
  • Make sure you keep possession of your phone at all times!
