Cash and Cards - tips for students
As a student, your money has to stretch a long way. Keep it safe by remembering these useful tips:
- Don't count or flash your cash in public.
- Reduce the withdrawal limit on your card to the minimum (usually £50), it'll stop a thief withdrawing your whole balance.
- Withdraw what you need for the day / night and leave your card locked up somewhere safe (this also helps to avoid spending wads of cash on a night out….trust us, the five trips to the cashpoint do not seem like such a good idea the morning after).
- If you can, withdraw your cash in daylight. Preferably using the machines inside the bank. If not, take a mate or two with you to the cashpoint. Even better, use cash back facilities at shops.
- Always shield the keyboard when typing in your PIN number.
- If someone crowds or watches you, cancel your transaction and move on
- Always put your cash and cards away before leaving the ATM
- Never keep a record of your PIN number with your wallet/purse
- If the ATM looks suspicious, as if it’s been tampered with, do not use it and report it to the bank.
- Find out the cancellation number for your cards. Write it down in your diary, programme it into your phone or leave it somewhere you know you'll find it easily when you're in a panic.
- Try and keep your wallet or purse in a safe place (ie about your person). If you keep it in your coat or bag keep your eye out when you take them off.
