Going Out - tips for students

One of the best things about student life is the social scene: making new friends and enjoying nights out clubbing and partying. It is important however to recognise that after a drink or two, we might let our guard down. Remembering the following tips will help to ensure that you can enjoy your night out without becoming a victim of crime.

personal safety

  • Avoid going to a pub, club or party alone.
  • Don't leave bags, coats or mobile phones unattended.
  • NEVER leave your drink unattended and NEVER accept a drink from someone you do not know or trust.
  • Do not drink from large open containers such as punchbowls.
  • If you begin to feel drunk, dizzy or disorientated, seek help from a trusted friend or a member of the pub / club staff.
  • Do not drink and drive, and do not accept a lift from anyone who has been drinking.
  • Carry enough money for a taxi.
  • Don't go out alone late at night, try and meet people as close to where you live as you can. If not, then call a good cab company and get a taxi.
  • Don't flag mini-cabs down. Either call a cab company and ask for the driver's name so that you can check it before you get in or hail a black cab

Drink spiking

  • Never leave drinks unattended in pubs or clubs. When you go to the toilet, ask your friends to keep an eye on your drink.
  • Try to have your drinks in bottles & cover the top with your thumb when walking around.
  • Men's drinks get spiked too.
  • If you suspect your drink has been spiked, contact a member of staff or tell a trusted friend.
